The Road to Reform

Event: The Road to Reform - Facing the Challenge of Modernity.

Join us for a historical event and witness the much awaited panel discussion between Shaykh (Dr.) Haitham Al-Haddad and Prof. Ramadan, for what promises to be an animated evening of intellectual intrigue and stimulating discourse on issues relating to the notion of Islamic Reform.

How should a “Western Islam” differ to its Eastern counterpart, if at all? What is modernisation? Does Islam need it? How have scholars responded to it in the past? Is reform a shocking innovation or is it a vital part of being faithful to Islam's inner intents? And quite importantly, does it have clear dimensions and strict remits? It is questions like these that we aim to tackle in an atmosphere of faithful academic discussion and debate between two leading figures in Western Islamic thought.

Bring your ideas and thoughts to the forefront of the event in a live question time workshop which aims to give you a platform and allow for an enriching experience.

You are also invited to join in the discussion right here on Islam21c by voicing your thoughts and comments in this months Article Series on the topic of Islamic Reform and Modernity. Furthermore, in the run up to the event, Islam21c will be continuing its Article Series through further insightful articles and video productions.

What will change people's mind?
written by Osman0987, October 17, 2010
What will make people of one opinion change their mind - 'change sides'

One aspect is this - those of the audience for whom تعظيم الوحى or the (honouring and respecting of revelation) is inbuilt, those who are submissive in their minds to the authority of what Allah and the Messenger has said, however little they may know about Islam, will most likely lean to one of the speakers...

That is because one of the problems of the modernist narrative is an implicit discomfort with aspects of revelation, however knowledgeable the person may be.

Powerful verses always from Soorah Israa -
"And indeed, they were about to tempt you away from that which We revealed to you in order to [make] you invent about Us something else; and then they would have taken you as a friend. And if We had not strengthened you, you would have almost inclined to them a little. Then [if you had], We would have made you taste double [punishment in] life and double [after] death. Then you would not find for yourself against Us a helper. "

'How come no one asks the white European NON-MUSLIM to reform' (not 'White European Muslim')
It is amazing....

The drive for reform is quite amazing. We are told Muslims have to REFORM. In the West we have to reform. In Pakistan they have to reform. In the Arab world they have to reform. In Britain we have to reform.

How come no one asks the the white European Muslim to reform. Those who do not believe in any God, do not know where they are coming from and where they are going to, live, eat, drink and sleep ( and sleep around), but they don't have to reform ... no, no, in Europe WE have to reform , the Muslim that prays and worships Allah.

If there is a problem we have as Muslims, is that we need to CONFORM, and they need to REFORM.

Of course we have problems, but it is not worse than the problem of kufr and the threat of ending in hellfire forever.

I would advise myself of this first - if there is one way we need to 'reform' is to be be sincere - sincere to Allah, his messenger, the Muslims and the People aaround us.

When we talk about going hand in hand with our fellow Europeans saying , lets join in our 'common values' - what may be understood is that , let us smile at each other about things we won't differ about but not upset each other.

It is amazing when we talk about our common values, being fellow Europeans and smile at each other while in our hearts believing they are going to hell if they do not believe - what insincere people we are.

That is why the best - and only model - for reformers is the model of the Prophets. They were SINCERE to the disbelievers around them and warned they they would go to hell, because they considered them to be their people and cared about the salvation of people. They didn't philosophise about their 'common values', in a way deceivig them , saying ' you are ok the way you are, we have the problem so We will reform!'

All the messengers were accused of causing 'fasaad', of being trouble-makers, of disrupting 'social-cohesion'. Yet little did the disbelievers know that the believers and following them was the only ray of hope for their salvation, that they were the saviours of the society in their eeman and faith.

There is a dangerous psychology among the Muslims that the problem is with us in this wonderful Europe. The sunnah of Allah for nations is they are tested in their rise, and they fall because of their corruption.

Muslims should be the conscience of Europe...
WHERE TO SUBMIT QUESTIONS FOR EVENT?
written by George, October 06, 2010
salaam

the poster asks us to submit questions pre-event. How ans where do we do so?
is this a good idea?
written by ABCDEFG, October 01, 2010
i hope this goes well , ie, people don't go away with the wrong message
Didn't many scholars in past not want to do debates because they may something which the audience doesn't understand and it looks like they 'lost' this could be a double edged sword for both parties. Hope it is a good spirited debate, intellectual and strikes a chord with the attendees - whoever comes across as more 'reasonable' is likely to be seen to 'win'....
