Almost 100 mosques throughout Germany and the Netherlands called out the ādhan (Muslim call to prayer) from its loudspeakers as a gesture of goodwill and support during the coronavirus pandemic.[1]
The call to prayer could be heard from mosques that are part of one of Germany’s largest Muslim-Turkish associations, the Islamic Community National View (IGMG), and to the Turkish-Muslim umbrella group DITIB.
Fahrettin Alptekin, a DITIB representative from Germany, said the ādhān could be heard from over 50 local mosques.
He added that having the ādhān broadcasted through its loudspeakers is generally not allowed in Germany, except on special occasions.
In the Netherlands, playing the ādhān through speakers is becoming more widespread in a show of unity and to promote solidarity against the virus.
Germany is the third-worst hit European country after Italy and Spain, with over 100,000 confirmed cases thus far.
Germany’s death toll rose to 1,584 at the time of writing, while the Netherlands’ death toll surpassed 1,766.
In circumstances like today, we must remind ourselves to turn back to Allāh. He (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) controls everything, and He is the only One that can relieve us from our difficult circumstances. We ask Allāh to keep us firm and to allow us to return to Him. We ask Him to forgive us and provide us with His Protection.
The coronavirus is currently affecting 208 countries and territories around the world as well as 1 international conveyance (the Diamond Princess cruise ship harboured in Yokohama, Japan).
There are around 1,276,302 registered coronavirus cases worldwide, with around 69,527 deaths.[2] Indeed to Allāh do we belong, and to Him do we return.
It is also important to note that around 264,048 people have recovered so far from the deadly virus, alḥamdulillāh.
We ask Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) to keep us all safe, healthy, and to enable us to take this opportunity to turn back to Him seeking forgiveness, and to cure our sick and protect our elderly. May Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) also accept those that have returned to him after having the coronavirus as martyrs, āmīn.
