With the renewed genocide nearing the three-year mark, hundreds of thousands of internally displaced people are still living in overcrowded shelters. In these makeshift tents, poor hygiene, limited access to clean water, and extreme heat are all contributing to the spread of skin diseases. [1]
They are affecting both children and adults, with constant itching, painful rashes, and limited access to treatment adding to the already difficult conditions.
In addition, medical points are recording dozens of cases of contagious skin diseases every day, including scabies, fungal infections, lice infestations, and bacterial infections. Health workers have said that the conditions in the camps are making it difficult to contain the spread of infection. We see families that are often forced to live in cramped shelters and share blankets and clothing, while medicines, disinfectants, and other medical supplies remain in short supply. [2]
Families are doing what they can
Access to water is another major challenge. Families are often forced to reduce the amount of water they use for bathing and washing clothes, so that limited supplies can be kept for drinking and cooking.
The accumulation of waste, deteriorating sewage systems, insects, and poor ventilation inside tents are also increasing the risk of infection. These conditions make it difficult for families to maintain even basic standards of hygiene.
In spite of all of the challenges, of all the physical and mental ordeal on a daily basis, we are still going and we still hold dear our dignity. By the will of Allah (subḥānahu wa ta’āla), we will continue to exist and are certain that our reward will be in the Hereafter.
