Police in Italy have conducted mass raids on ‘far-right’ targets, seizing large caches of illegal and deadly weapons, including an air-to-air missile, which were allegedly intended to be used against Muslims living in Europe.
The raids were conducted in the northern city of Turin throughout a month and uncovered hundreds of machine guns, automatic rifles, and semi-automatic weapons, as well as an 800kg air-to-air Matra missile that could potentially have been launched to reach long-range distances.
“During the operation, an air-to-air missile in perfect working order and used by the Qatari army was seized,” Italian police said in a statement, adding that other “latest generation” weaponry thought to be manufactured in the US was discovered. [1]
During the raids, police arrested three people, including Fabio Del Bergiolo, a former candidate for the ‘far-right’ and neo-fascist Forza Nuova party. Del Bergiolo’s home was also raided and police discovered more weapons, as well as Nazi propaganda and Hitler memorabilia.
Other individuals arrested were a 42 year-old-Swiss man and a 51-year-old Italian man, who were accused of holding the missile and marketing it.
According to police, Del Bergiolo was reportedly planning to sell the missile for a million Euros. The projectile measured 354 meters and did not contain an explosive charge. However, the missile could be armed by specialists.
Officers were able to intercept messages on WhatsApp from Del Bergiolo, who had also sent photos of the missile on WhatsApp. The ’far-right extremist’ had been put on surveillance prior to the raid on his house.
