Thousands at the al-Masjid al-Aqsa Pray over the Victims of New Zealand’s Terrorist Attack

By Ahmed Hammuda 8 Raj 40 ◦︎ 15 Mar 19

Thousands of Palestinians at al-Masjid al-Aqsa in Palestine prayed the absentee funeral prayer (Salāt al-Ghā’ib) on the victims of New Zealand’s terrorist attack on two separate Mosques in which 50 Muslim worshippers were martyred.

In an extraordinary display of Muslim unity and heart touching symbolism of solidarity from Islam’s first Qibla and place of Prophetic ascension, the Khatīb and Mufti of Jerusalem said:

“We ask Allāh to send His mercy on the victims of this terrorist crime in New Zealand in which tens were martyred and injured” highlighting the comparable daily terrors inflicted on the citizens of al-Aqsa by Israeli Occupation Forces. “Al-Masjid al-Aqsa belongs to Muslims, and is neither up for negotiation nor a subject of compromise… we reject any Israeli measure taking against al-Masjid al-Aqsa.”

Thousands of Muslim worshippers lined the walls of the cherished Masjid, inside the built area, in all parts of the raised compound and in the vicinity of its many gates, praying and supplicating for their brothers and sisters in New Zealand.

Al-Masjid al-Aqsa itself speaks of the brutality of successive despotic regimes and extremists, not least in the year 1990, when thousands of settlers stormed the Masjid al-Aqsa compound trying to place a rock which was allegedly a foundation stone for Solomon’s temple.

Thousands of Palestinians assembled to ward off the group, and were met with live Israeli gunfire. More than 20 Palestinians were shot dead and hundreds fell injured.[1] Pools of blood on the sanctuary spread to almost 200 metres in length.

In light of the atrocity in New Zealand, al-Masjid al-Aqsa also recollects its siege in 1099, during the First Crusade in which tens of thousands of Muslims seeking sanctuary from the harrowing crusaders were butchered. Today, al-Aqsa remains the victim of frequent incursions by scores extreme right-wing Zionist settlers.

In response to an instruction from Gaza’s Ministry of Religious Endowments, mosques throughout Gaza and occupied Palestine prayed the absentee Funeral Prayer on the souls of their martyred brothers and sisters in New Zealand.[2]
