Islam places a great importance on the care, well-being, and upbringing of young children, particularly those in vulnerable situations. Over the years, lots of Muslim refugee children have helplessly fled to the UK, escaping the never-ending conflict in their homelands, in the hopes of gaining a better life for themselves.

However, given the reluctance of many Muslims towards the idea of fostering and adoption, and the increasingly large number of Muslim refugees coming to the UK, many of them are being placed into the care of non-Muslim guardians. As a result, these children grow up without the correct religious values or principles.

With the Prophet (ﷺ) in Paradise

The Prophet (ﷺ) would often highlight the importance of taking care of such vulnerable children:

أَنَا وَكَافِلُ الْيَتِيمِ فِي الْجَنَّةِ هَكَذَا وَقَالَ بِإِصْبَعَيْهِ السَّبَّابَةِ وَالْوُسْطَى

“Myself and the caretaker of an orphan will be in Paradise like this” – and he held his index and middle fingers together. [1]

If this was the eagerness that the Prophet (ﷺ) displayed with respect to ordinary orphans, how far would he (ﷺ) go to protect vulnerable orphans who are fleeing war-torn countries and losing their religious identities?

Action plan

As we explore the different types of charitable actions we can do in what remains of this month, let’s entertain the idea of bringing a Muslim refugee into our care.

Here are a few steps we can take to make significant change to their lives:

  1. Consider fostering or adopting a Muslim refugee if we have the means, with the aim of preserving their religion and faith;
  2. Make family and friends aware of the current refugee crisis in the UK, and how we can make a stark difference to their lives;
  3. Support charitable organisations that aim to provide such children with education, aid, and therapy.

Coming up

As we put ourselves in the shoes of the children suffering, let’s keep an eye out for the next topic we will be discussing: joining a campaign.

Do you know of a meaningful campaign that you can join?
