Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhī rājiʿūn. Indeed, to Allah we belong, and to Him we are returning.
It is with sorrow that we share the news of the passing of Shaykh Abu Ishaq al-Houweny, a prominent Egyptian scholar of hadīth and student of the late muhaddith, Shaykh Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani. [1]
The senior scholar, 68, had lived in Doha, Qatar for at least the past decade, after relocating due to the Sisi regime’s crackdown on Muslim leaders from 2013 onwards.
In recent times, he had been in declining health and suffered a stroke prior to his death on Monday, 17 Ramadan 1446.
May Allah have mercy upon him and grant him the highest level of Paradise.
Background
Shaykh Abu Ishaq al-Houweny was born into a farming family, in the northern Egyptian village of Hewen on 10 June 1956 (1 Dhuʻl-Qiʻdah 1375).
His birth name was Hijazi Muhammad Yousuf Sharif. However, he became more popularly referred to by the kunya, Abu Ishāq — after the Companion Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqās, and the 14th century scholar, Abu Ishāq al-Shatibī — followed by the name of his village.
Among other alma mater, he studied at Madrasat al-Alsun and Ain Shams University, both of which are located in Cairo, Egypt. At Ain Shams, he learnt Spanish.
Legacy
Alongside his studies in fiqh, aqīdah, and hadīth, Shaykh Abu Ishaq al-Houweny was a teacher and regular guest on the al-Nas television programme, al-Fadfada — covering topics of a religious, social, and moral nature.
He was also the author of a number of books on the authentication and analysis of ahadīth.
Funeral and burial
Shaykh Abu Ishaq’s funeral prayer was held at the State Grand Mosque (also known as the Imam Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhab Mosque) on Tuesday afternoon.
Burial took place at Mesaimeer Cemetery thereafter. [2]
The loss of any Muslim scholar is a loss for the entire Ummah, may Allah grant the late shaykh al-Firdaws for his life’s efforts in propagating Islam.
