Alhamdulillah, brother Moazzam Begg mentioned the 16 brothers, mainly North African and Middle Eastern, who, after 9/11, were detained without charge or trial for many years here in the UK. I just want to say that many of them were the Algerians who Babar Ahmed talked about in his Islam21C podcast. We regularly hear about the human cost of unfair detention on Guantanamo brothers but the price that our Algerian brothers paid and are still paying has been and is being ignored.
They lost out on seeing their own children grow up, their marriages broke down and some are living in what we would call poverty. It seems like our Algerian brothers have paid a heavy price for following fatwas that were given to them by non-Algerian scholars and for not ‘inheriting cowardice’.
