Ibn Rajab on the 15th of Sha’ban [Repost]

Ibn Rajab on the 15th of Sha’ban [Repost]
It is a month to which people do not pay (sufficient) attention, between Rajab and Ramadan, and it is a month in which deeds are lifted up to the Lord of the Worlds...
The erudite scholar, jurist, and traditionalist, the learned Zain ad-Din Abu al-Faraj 'Abd ar-Rahman ibn Ahmad ibn 'Abd ar-Rahman ibn al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn Abi al-Barakah Mas'ud al-Sulami al-Baghdadi al-Hanbali, also known as Al Hafidh Ibn Rajab Al Hanbali stated the following in Lataa'if Al-Ma'arif :
Some of the tabi’een (followers of the prophetic companions) based in Shaam such as Khalid ibn Ma'dan, Mak’hul, and Luqman ibn ‘Amir would revere the 15th of Sha'ban by offering supererogatory prayers during the night - it is said that they were influenced by isra’eeliyyat (Judaic traditions). Gradually, this custom spread to many areas of the Muslim empire creating misunderstandings and differences of opinion amongst the people. Some accepted it, among whom were devout worshippers from Basra, but most of the scholars of the Hijaz rejected and condemned it such as 'Ataa’ and lbn Abi Mulaika, as well as the scholars of Madinah such as Abd Al Rahman ibn Zayd and the Maliki school of law, all agreeing to it being an innovation. The scholars of Shaam differed as to how the 15th of Sha'ban should be distinguished. The first set preferred spending the night in the mosque collectively as being recommended. Amongst those who opined thus were Khalid ibn Ma'dan, Luqman ibn 'Amir et al, all who would adorn themselves with special apparel for the occasion and hasten to the mosque where they would remain in worship throughout the night. Is’haq bin Rahaway’h endorsed such a practice and said that celebrating this night collectively in the mosque is not to be considered an innovation. The other set of scholars regarded marking the 15th of Sha’ban by collective prayer, story-telling and supplication as being disliked. However, Al Awza'i, the Imam, jurist and scholar of Syria opined that and it is not disliked for a person to pray at home individually; this is closest to the truth.

Step back in this evil world where islam is so misrepresented look at us ordinary folk we in the mosques we are making dua. Allah did not forbid us from making dua anytime. ishallah may allah grant us hidaayat

As far as i know there is a hadith reported by Aisha RA that the Prophet SAW used to stay up this night to pray. As far as I know no one has called this hadith as false.

Asalaamu 'Alaikum
Some of the Brothers have actually answered the question themselves using sources 'acclaimed' by the so-called 'Salafis'. Has anyone ever pndered upon the fact that to use the ord 'Salafi' is in fact a Bid'ah in itself? Did the Prophet 'Alaihi Salaatu wa Salaam ever use that term? He stated that the best three generations were His (SAAWAS), then the following generation, then the generation that followed that, but as far as I am aware and remember here I am no scholar (and neither I think are the larege proportion of those contributing to this discussion, for that matter). The sources qouted by one of the brothers above are in fact using evidences praised by the 'Salafis' themselves. I will take the liberty of posting a fairly short clip from youtube refuting and debating the Salafi viewpoint as I feel is is relevant in this current discussion. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...ideo_title

Bidh`ah or bidh`ah hassanah?
written by Faraz Choudhry, July 15, 2011

The differences of opinion are caused by some claiming there not to be any such thing as bidh`ah hassanah based on assuming that anyone who decides to regulate their worship by scheduling it per month or per year, always falsely intends or professes it to be a Sunnah when it's not. It might just be that does not expect any extra reward for it other than what is already quantitatively rewarded for doing within his or her own capability.
15th of Sha'baan

Certain countries in the sub-continent strongly believe in singling out the 15th of Sha'baan to other nights which was not the practice of our beloved prophet Muhammad peace and blessings of Allah be upon Him. Our beloved prophet did fast the most during the month of Sha'baan compared to other months except Ramadan as per authentic hadiths, but singling out just one night of Sha'baan might fall under bida'h (innovation)according to most scholars which is not allowed in Islam as bida'h leads to hellfire according to our beloved prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon Him). And Allah knows best! We should ask Allah Subhanawat'ala to forgive our shortcomings and sins and give us a chance to benefit from the blessed month of Ramadan Ameen! May Allah Subhanawat'ala guides us all Ameen!
Laylat al-Nusf min Sha’baan (the middle of Sha’baan) should not be singled out for worship

Praise be to Allaah.
There is no saheeh marfoo’ report that speaks of the virtue of the middle of Sha’baan that may be followed, not even in the chapters on al-Fadaa’il (chapters on virtues in books of hadeeth etc.). Some maqtoo’ reports (reports whose isnaads do not go back further than the Taabi’een) have been narrated from some of the Taabi’een, and there are some ahaadeeth, the best of which are mawdoo’ (fabricated) or da’eef jiddan (very weak). These reports became very well known in some countries which were overwhelmed by ignorance; these reports suggest that people’s lifespans are written on that day or that it is decided on that day who is to die in the coming year. On this basis, it is not prescribed to spend this night in prayer or to fast on this day, or to single it out for certain acts of worship. One should not be deceived by the large numbers of ignorant people who do these things. And Allaah knows best.
Shaykh Ibn Jibreen.
If a person wants to pray qiyaam on this night as he does on other nights – without doing anything extra or singling this night out for anything – then that is OK. The same applies if he fasts the day of the fifteenth of Sha’baan because it happens to be one of the ayyaam al-beed, along with the fourteenth and thirteenth of the month, or because it happens to be a Monday or Thursday. If the fifteenth (of Sha’baan) coincides with a Monday or Thursday, there is nothing wrong with that (fasting on that day), so long as he is not seeking extra reward that has not been proven (in the saheeh texts). And Allaah knows best.

I completely agree with muslims. It is our duty to worship as much as we can. So what if one was to stay up all night in prayer. Why not? If ones intention is to ge extra sawab.so y not? We pray our namazs but if you was to pray loadsa nafls does dat make us wrong for doing so? One should understand that we should strive to do as much prayers as possible and one that says no should think who are theyre prayers for? And who is rewarding those prayers. Let it be said pray in this month as much as possible and never preach to others that prayers during any night is allowed or not allowed. Muslim brothers and sisters those that say dnt pray ignore them they are sided with shaytan open your eyes and think however much prayers you can offer after ur farz then do it. Even it meant reading Quran surah Yaseen or whatever

Assalamu alykum, Subhanallah...its obvious that Sha'ban and the 15th night
has been exploited by many groups and spoiled the virtue of the month, as for if we look at the bigger picture there is much to be gained:
1) Abu Musa Ashari, Radi-Allahu anhu, reports that Prophet Muhammad, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, has said: "Allah Almighty looks upon all those created by Him in the middle Night of Sha'ban and forgives all those created by Him, except the one who associates partners with Him or the one who has malice in his heart" Ibn Maja (Al-Albani declares this as hasan in narration (good)
Shaykh Ibn Taymiyya considered the night of mid-Sha`ban "a night of superior merit" in his Iqtida' al-sirat al-mustaqim:
[Some] said: There is no difference between this night (mid-Sha`ban) and other nights of the year. However, the opinion of many of the people of learning, and that of the majority of our companions (i.e. the Hanbali school) and other than them is that it is a night of superior merit, and this is what is indicated by the words of Ahmad (ibn Hanbal), in view of the many ahadith which are transmitted concerning it, and in view of what confirms this from the words and deeds transmitted from the early generations.
Ibn Hibban narrated from Mu`adh ibn Jabal in his Sahih the following narration which the hadith scholar and editor of the Sahih Shu`ayb Arna'ut confirmed as sound:
The Prophet said : yattali`u Allahu ila khalqihi fi laylati al-nisfi min sha`bana fa-yaghfiru li-jami`i khalqihi illa li mushrikin aw mushahin.
Allah looks at His creation in the night of mid-Sha`ban and He forgives all His creation except for a mushrik (idolater) or a mushahin (one bent on hatred)
-------------
So brothers/sisters lets look at the Hadith and the authentic narrations mentioned and not to just 'Blind follow' websites that just clip the reality and make unneccessary fasad

As I was reading the discussions on the solemn activities during the 15th of Sha'ban, I prayed to Allah (swt) to give me and the Muslims as a whole, the strengths and energies to offer much prayers and ask forgiveness from HIM not only on this day but towards the our last breath.
As the Holy Qur'an said in Surah Al-Imran...102-O you who believe! Fear Allah as He should be feared. (Obey Him, be thankful to Him and remember Him always,) and die not except in a state of Islam.

In another Tradition Sayyidah' Aishah, Radi-Allahu anha, has reported that Prophet Muhammad, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, has said, "Allah Almighty descends (in a manner He best knows it) in the night occurring in the middle of Sha'ban and forgives a large number of people more than the number of the fibers on the sheep of the tribe, Kalb."
Ibn Taymiya's view on 15th Sha'ban
written by Abuz Zubair, July 25, 2010
written by Abuz Zubair, July 25, 2010
As far as I understand from Ibn Taymiya, and do correct me if I am wrong, many of the scholars, especially the Hanbalis, considered 15th of Sha'ban to be a special night, and this is also mansus from Imam Ahmad. In his al-Fatawa al-Kubra, he even stated that it is good for a person to pray that night whether alone or even in a private gathering (jama'ah). What he objected to was people gathering in mosques for the purpose of praying a particular prayer in congregation with fixed numbers of units, etc, as that resembles the Sharia (fixed five daily prayers, two eids, etc).
This is in fact Ibn Taymiya's opinion, too. Ibn Taymiya argues that there exist many marfu' narrations as well as athar which dictate that this is a special night.
Allahu Alam
...However, Al Awza'i, the Imam, jurist and scholar of Syria opined that and it is not disliked for a person to pray at home individually; this is closest to the truth...
Furthermore, Ibn Rajab’s final comment regarding Imam Al Awza’i’s view (as being ‘closest to the truth’) seems somewhat dubious given that he establishes that it has no prophetic source.

What good does it do for the individual for us to ponder on the practice of Rajab? I as a young Muslim am find that with just knowing that during the month of Ramadan and any other month we as a community should be in a continous race to worship Allah and do good deeds. For me any conversation that interupts that mind set is what the scholors need to question. If we can stay a day and night in the mosque as a group worshiping Allah great, why not open up the mosque for this type of prayer when possable to do so.

WAllah it's the foolishness of people that they give preference to the acts of bid'ah against sunnah and obligations. Why majority of muslims have eyes to see only the forged and extremely week ahadith, why can't they see authentic ahadith and hadith which enjoins obligation on them. Majority of muslims are committing acts of bid'ah(innovation) and it's evident and an open truth that majority of muslims are care less about faraiz(obligatory prayers and other obligations)
any person with sound reasoning can understand that Salaf(ahle-hadeeth) calls towards the abandoning of all those acts which nullifies once Islam and to hold to the rope of Allah(which is only Qur'an and Sahih-ahadith).I have no intentions to criticize any sect or any group of people but it is evident that there is still a jama'ah that holds to the true teachings of Islam. May Allah bless us with scholars like Shaikh Al-Albani rahimahullah and ibn-baaz rahimahullah.
Muslims should use their intellect to find out the truth and not just follow what they found their parents and localites follow to them. They should thank Allah that they are born in a muslim family but yet in the midst of diverse ideas and sects amongst the Muslim community. Allah has blessed everyone of us with reasoning so why shouldn't we try to seek knowledge and accept the truth with being prejudiced.
However, to those, who call Ahle-Hadees as ghair muqallid; I thank them whole-heartedly because I have checked the meaning of Muqallid and surely Allah subhanahu has not reduced us to such an extent of degrade and helpless.
