Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn. Indeed, to Allah we belong, and to Him we are returning.
The Islam21c team would like to extend their sincerest condolences to Amanpaul Dhaliwal (and his family), whose wife has passed away and returned to her Lord (subḥānahu wa taʿālā). May Allah have mercy upon her.
This is surely a difficult time for the family and their loved ones. Losing a spouse and parent is to lose a teacher, a supporter, a friend, and an entire familial connection to the past.
Allah (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) declares:
“Wherever you are, death will overtake you, even if you be in lofty towers.”[1]
“Everyone shall taste death. And only on the Day of Resurrection shall you be paid your wages in full. And whoever is removed away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise, he indeed is successful. The life of this world is only the enjoyment of deception.”[2]
Death is a certainty of life. Indeed, life itself is a test; man shall die and be questioned. It is in this sense that Allah informs humans by way of counsel and encouragement that it is only the believers who are successful: they are the ones who will avoid the Fire and secure admittance into Paradise. When a believer dies, it is a time of great tragedy and loss for the community. But those who submit to the will of Allah pay heed to what has been revealed:
“And certainly, We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to the patient; those who when afflicted with calamity, say: from Allah do we come, and to Him we shall return.”[3]
Janazah prayers will be straight after Jummah Salah tomorrow (Friday 3rd September).
Following the death of his wife, Amanpaul said:
“My wife Sonia’s time finally came today as she returned to Allah a few hours ago. Alhamdulillah, Allah gave her many signs of a good death. I’m so blessed to have been married to her and so proud of her for all the strength, iman and inspiration she showed us throughout her amazing life right up until her last hour.”
He also reiterated his gratitude to every person who supported them throughout this difficult and emotional journey.

Dr Salman Butt offered his condolences to the family and urged others to do the same:
“Our sincere condolences go out to the whole family and we make du’a that Allah grants our sister the highest Jannah, make her a neighbour of the Prophet ﷺ, and make her descendants a sadaqa jāriya for her. The sabr and īmān with which the whole family has acted in these last few years has been inspiring; Allah chose to give an inspirational end to an inspirational life.”
“I was just reflecting on how many different people from different parts of the world I’ve heard have been making du’a for her and her family—from the deserts of Mauritania to the snowy mountains of Canada, and in-between. Perhaps there was a special sincerity between her and her Lord, as a result of which He bestowed her a blessed end to this chapter of her life. The next chapter, however, is of course more enduring, may Allah reunite her with her loved ones along with the Prophets, Messengers and righteous throughout time to enjoy that delight for eternity.”

A legacy page was created for Sonia, who leaves behind three children. These young children will undoubtedly find the loss of their beloved mother to be very difficult. The page is to ensure that their mother’s legacy continues, by supporting her children’s future and building legacy projects in her name.

We pray that Allah (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) grants patience and strength to all of her family. May Allah (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) have mercy on her, forgive her, and elevate her ranks in Jannah. Āmīn! We also ask Allah (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) to make this difficult time an expiation of sins and the raising of rank in the sight of our Lord.
