A breakaway region that is 34-years-old. Unrecognised by the world. And yet it has now been “recognised” by an apartheid settler state that usurped the land of Palestine and refuses to recognise Palestinians? Is this not the definition of irony? [1]
Those Arab leaders who lean toward the Zionist regime — and the arguably useless OIC (Organisation of Islamic Cooperation) — don’t seem to be happy. It is not because Muslim lands are being divided further! It is rather because they’re worried that recognising one breakaway region opens a Pandora’s Box. From Türkiye to Syria, Nigeria to Morocco, countless colonial fault lines already exist. [2]
We should remember that a number of leaders barely survived the Arab Spring — so they know full well how fragmentation threatens their own survival. It is really about power, control, and fear.
BACKGROUND
- On 26 December 2025, the Zionist regime became the first and only state to recognise Somaliland
- In its desperation to seek new allies, Israel has taken this step and faced universal condemnation, even from countries such as the UK and China
- With an estimated 186,000 killed or injured according to some estimates, the genocide in Gaza has isolated Israel on the world stage like never before
- A breakaway state that is internationally recognised as part of Somalia, Somaliland's leader has discussed taking in displaced Palestinians
Somaliland is an Islamic issue
Even though Somaliland is part of Somalia, this is beyond just a Somali issue. In fact, it is an Ummah-wide issue.
Why? For over a century, Muslim lands have been fragmented, partitioned, and re-engineered. First, after the collapse of the Ottoman Caliphate, and later through colonial borders and proxy regimes.
This latest recognition is no different, it’s clearly about geography, strength, and control.
Somaliland is a strategic global point
Somaliland sits on the Gulf of Aden, beside the Bab al-Mandab Strait — this just happens to be one of the most strategic shipping lanes on Earth. [3]
Nearly a third of global trade passes through here in container traffic, linking the Indian Ocean to the Suez Canal. Control this chokepoint, and you gain leverage over global trade, energy, and security.
For Israel, this means:
- A foothold in the Horn of Africa
- Proximity to Yemen and the Red Sea
- Strategic leverage against Iran and the Houthis
- Proposals involving Palestinian displacement to Somaliland. [4]
Somaliland another colonial agent?
Whilst the outrage for Somaliland’s self-described Muslim leadership is understandable, in truth there is little difference between Saudi ruler MBS (Mohammed bin Salman), Emirati ruler MBZ (Mohamed bin Zayed al-Nahyan), Egypt’s Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, and others!
Throughout Islamic history, there have always been rulers who aligned with external powers, from the Franks and Crusaders to colonial empires. Today, it is alignment with Zionist and other imperial interests — all for personal power, protection, and economic gain, even when it comes at the expense of fellow Muslims.
This is not a new strategy. It is the same colonial formula repeated again and again: fragment the land → recognise selectively → empower proxies → turn Muslims against Muslims. We saw it in Sudan, Iraq, Syria, Libya. And most tragically, in Palestine.
To the Muslims of Somaliland and Somalia
Do not let engineered nationalism turn you against each other. Your enemy is not your Muslim brother — it is those who profit from your division.
Islam teaches us that the Muslim is the brother of a Muslim. Hold unjust rulers to account. Reject foreign manipulation. Refuse to be used. Call for unity.
Do not become pawns in another colonial chess game, because until the Ummah understands divide and rule, Muslim lands, wealth, and resources will continue to fall prey to colonial control.
It is time to see through these old colonial plans and to call for global Muslim unity under the Caliphate.
