A broad coalition of organisations is urging Imams across the country to dedicate their Jumu’ah khutbah on 12 December to highlighting the plight of individuals who are unjustly and oppressively imprisoned around the world.

Among the organisations supporting the initiative are the Muslim Association of Britain (MAB), CAGE International, Al-Khaleel Institute, Darul Ihsaan (Barking), Friends of Al-Aqsa (FOA), Newham Muslim Forum, and Scholars Authenticated.

Renowned UK scholars have also endorsed this initiative, emphasising the urgent need to raise awareness within Muslim communities and to mobilise meaningful action in support of efforts to secure the release of those detained without justice.

In a statement, the coalition said,

Supporting the oppressed and standing with the unjustly detained is a core part of our Dīn. Yet many have forgotten this responsibility. Now more than ever, our unity, awareness, and impactful action are needed.”

The coalition is calling on Imams nationwide to join this important effort by addressing their congregations on this critical issue. Imams are encouraged to use their sermons to inspire awareness, advocacy, and collective prayer for all those suffering under unjust imprisonment.

Points of action

  • Make abundant du’ā
  • Create awareness by using social media
  • Expose the torture that prisoners of conscience are facing
  • Write to your MP and local councillors to raise and reiterate the issue
  • Petition for change among lawmakers and those in positions of influence
  • Individually and collectively support families of the detained, where possible
  • Masājid must be active on educating the community on standing up for justice.
