We are now well into Rajab — and most Muslims waste it! But the Prophet ﷺ and the Companions didn’t. After all, this month is the gateway to Ramadan.
Rajab is one of the four Sacred Months Allah ﷻ highlights in the Qur’ān:
Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve… of them, four are sacred.” [1]
The early scholars, including Ibn ‘Abbas (radiy Allahu ‘anhu), explained that in the Sacred Months good deeds carry greater reward and sins carry greater weight. This means Rajab is not a month to drift through — it’s four weeks to slow down, seek forgiveness, and reset the heart.
Rajab is where preparation begins. Intentions are set here — so Ramadan doesn’t arrive unprepared. And that’s why we can’t afford to waste it.
Du’ā of Rajab
‘Anas (radiy Allahu ‘anhu) reported that when Rajab arrived, the Prophet ﷺ would say,
O Allah, bless us in Rajab and Sha’bān and bring us to Ramadan.” [2]
Rajab is just a stone’s throw from Ramadan — so close, yet not guaranteed. Allah’s Qadr may take us before we arrive, so this du’ā is a beautiful reminder: we should prepare spiritually, seek Allah’s blessings, and yearn for Ramadan, rather than waiting until it arrives.
Let’s memorise and repeat this du’ā, so we may be granted the blessing of witnessing another Ramadan and enter it ready, renewed, and spiritually awake.
Cultivate the soul
Classical scholars remind us that Rajab is a month of cultivation.
Ibn Rajab al-Hanbalī explains:
Rajab is the month to sow the seeds. Sha’bān is the month to irrigate the crop. And Ramadan is the month to reap the harvest.” [3]
In other words, Rajab is the launch pad for your Ramadan success. Start small, start consistent, start now!
Month of victory and history
Rajab is steeped in history, victories, and inspiration.
| Date | Event | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 9 Rajab 9 AH (630) | The Expedition of Tabūk | When Allah granted victory to the Prophet ﷺ against the Romans without a battle. |
| 27 Rajab 1 AH (621) | The Isrā’ and Mi‘rāj | The miraculous Night Journey and Ascension of the Prophet ﷺ — the solace, comfort, and vision given divinely to the Prophet ﷺ. |
| 27 Rajab 583 AH (1187) | Salāh al-Dīn al-Ayyūbī’s liberation of Jerusalem | A monumental historical time of courage and leadership. |
| 28 Rajab 1342 AH (1924) | The abolition of the Khilafah | Reminding us of the consequences of disunity. |
This is a month to connect our actions with the legacy of the Ummah.
Call to action
Don’t waste Rajab. Remember that Rajab is the key and Ramadan is the reward.
In the days we have left of this sacred month, let it awaken your heart, mind, and vision. Prepare spiritually through fasting, dhikr, and istighfār. Reflect on the lessons of history — the courage of the Prophet ﷺ, the triumph of Salāh al-Dīn al-Ayyūbī, and the consequences of disunity.
And let your preparation extend beyond yourself: stand for justice, support the oppressed, and raise awareness for those facing trials today — in Gaza, Sudan, or anywhere injustice prevails.
Make this month of Rajab count — so that when Ramadan arrives, your actions, intentions, and spirit are ready for barakah, closeness to Allah, and meaningful impact.
