When it does seem like they are trying to have a good character with people and to resolve conflicts with them, it is only superficial, because the inner work with Allah has not been done, and that’s why they soon go back to the bad character they showed before.

@48:15 Ustadh Majed Mahmoud said, “Good character is with the Creator and the creation.”

I think that when people have problems with other people and are not good towards them, be they spouses, children, parents, siblings, friends, colleagues etc. or they are good with some and extremely bad with others, it is because deep down they do not have a good character towards Allah. The reason why they can’t resolve their conflicts with people is because they refuse to resolve an inner conflict they have with Allah, but because much of their worship is in public, they don’t allow themselves the privacy to work on their relationship with Allah and to discover what is going on inside their hearts. Like Dr. Uthman Lateef said in his Islam21C podcast,

“Remember that every person immersed in self-grandiosity needs a spectacle. You cannot function as a human being by yourself. So the whole process we have in Islam of khulwah, these things are really, may Allah grant us that [seclusion]…because that’s where your self worth is found…you can’t have self discovery only through the lens of a thousand cameras at you.”
