Tears of a Generation Long Gone

By Ejaz Taj 28 Jm2 36 ◦︎ 17 Apr 15

Very few things can compare with thumbing through pages filled with accounts of the blessed early generations of Islām. Generations for whom a gathering, an incident, a scene or anything seen with the eyes, heard by the ears, or felt by the skin could be turned into a heart shaking reminder of one’s status in this life and of the terrifying day to come. I came across this beautiful account in one of Ibn Abī Al-Dunya’s works;[1] an account which came from the deepest recesses of the soul of a self-reproaching monotheist. The days of the abundance of such people are far left behind.

It was narrated to me by Muḥammad b. Al-Hussein who said, “it was narrated to me by Mujālid b. ʿUbayd” who said, “it was narrated to us by Ibrāhīm b. Subh Al-Burrād” who said, “We entered once upon Al-Mughīrah Abī Muḥammad. He was an individual, such that when he would speak, he would weep and cause others to also weep.  So He (Al-Mughīrah) said to us as advice,

“Oh my brothers, weep! Make these eyes and hearts of yours weep! For indeed the one who is sad and full of grief today will tomorrow rejoice [in the hereafter]…

And the one who cries today will be the one laughing in the Hereafter…

And the one who is fearful today will be the one safe and secure in the Hereafter…

And the one suffering from hunger and weariness in this world will forever have his full share of food and be satisfied in the Hereafter…

And the one suffering from thirst will forever have this thirst quenched by Allāh in the Hereafter…

Therefore select your choices [in this life] carefully! And do not cheat another in any way, such that you are then brought to destruction for it!

Al-Mughīrah then began to cry and so did all those around him…”

Cry to Allah , Turn to Allah
Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, “Seven people Allah will give them His Shade on the Day when there would be no shade but the Shade of His Throne (i.e., on the Day of Resurrection): And they are: a just ruler; a youth who grew up with the worship of Allah; a person whose heart is attached to the mosques, two men who love and meet each other and depart from each other for the sake of Allah; a man whom an extremely beautiful woman seduces (for illicit relation), but he (rejects this offer and) says: `I fear Allah’; a man who gives in charity and conceals it (to such an extent) that the left hand does not know what the right has given; and a man who remembers Allah in solitude and his eyes become tearful“. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
