Few stories are richer in wisdom than that of Prophet Yūsuf (ʿalayhi al-Salām). Chronicled within an entire chapter of the Qur’ān, his character outlines the lasting power of perseverance, trusting in Allah, and the steady character that tackles adversity. [1]

Seeds of transformation

Our story begins in a well — a place of suffocating darkness, isolation, and despair.

Betrayed by his own brothers, Yūsuf (ʿalayhi al-Salām) found himself cast aside, seemingly abandoned for good.

And yet, it was within this very pit that the seeds of his remarkable journey were sown. This act of betrayal, far from being the end, became the catalyst for a series of divine orchestrations that would propel Yūsuf (ʿalayhi al-Salām) to extraordinary heights.

Learning from trials

Yūsuf’s narrative (ʿalayhi al-Salām) offers a vital lesson when faced with hardship.

It very much reminds us that our circumstances do not dictate our reality; rather, it is our belief, patience, and unshakable spirit that shape our path.

Allah (subḥānahu wa ta’āla) narrates this truth:

“Indeed, he who fears Allah and is patient, then indeed, Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good.” [2]

From prisoner to power

From the suffocating depths of the well, Yūsuf’s journey (ʿalayhi al-Salām) took him to Egypt, where he encountered further trials — false accusations and unjust imprisonment.

But it was through these very hardships that his character was refined, and his faith emerged even stronger. The gift Allah had given him, of interpreting dreams, eventually led him to a position of immense power and influence in Egypt.

Yūsuf’s ascent (ʿalayhi al-Salām) from prisoner to treasurer is a powerful illustration of how divine wisdom can transform adversity into strength.

His story (ʿalayhi al-Salām) also offers a guiding light for all who face adversity. It teaches us that with the attributes of righteousness, no well is too deep to escape, and no height is beyond reach!

Action points

  • Bullet 1 Trust in Allah's timing and wisdom when facing hardship; He knows everything while we know little.
  • Bullet 2 Even in the darkest of times, hold fast to your principles. Yūsuf trusted in Allah when all seemed lost.
  • Bullet 3 Understand that, though we may not realise at the time, in difficulty we find keys to future success.
