The story of Hājar (ʿalayha al-Salām), the mother of Prophet Ismā’īl (ʿalayhi al-Salām) and wife of Prophet Ibrāhīm (ʿalayhi al-Salām), is a testament to her steady trust in Allah, despite the desolate nature of the desert. [1]
Visualise Hājar (ʿalayha al-Salām), accompanied by her young son, left by Ibrāhīm (ʿalayhi al-Salām) in the barren valley of Makkah with only a small supply of provisions. As their resources dwindled and the cries of thirst echoed from her son, the situation seemed hopeless.
And yet, Hājar’s faith remained unshaken (ʿalayha al-Salām).
The well of Zamzam
Fuelled by absolute trust in Allah’s mercy, she ran seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwa, desperately searching for water or any sign of help.
This effort was met with a miraculous reward. The angel Jibrīl (ʿalayhi al-Salām) struck the ground with his wing, and from the Earth sprang forth the Zamzam well, providing them with a life-sustaining source of water.
This event not only ensured their survival but also marked the spot as a sacred place, eventually becoming the site of the holiest site in Islam, the Haram. Hājar’s experience in the desert, her absolute trust in Allah’s plan, and her active efforts to find solutions offer a profound lesson in spiritual and mental fortitude.
