Shaykh Dr. Haitham al-Haddad

Shaykh Dr. Haitham al-Haddad is a jurist who seeks to contextualise classical Islamic knowledge for the modern era. He is a firm believer that Islam is uniquely qualified — more than any other system — to build a divine civilisation capable of helping humanity to enjoy a better life in all spheres by maintaining the correct balance between the rights of the Creator and the rights of the creation. He believes Islam is the only viable alternative to the failing unjust and oppressive contemporary world systems, as Allah says: "You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind: you enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and believe in Allah." (al-Qur'ān, 3:110) According to this verse, Shaykh Haitham identifies the pillars of Islamic reform as īmān (faith), unity of the Ummah, impactful action, and knowledge. Drawing from his expertise in Islamic principles — Usūl al-Fiqh, Maqāsid al-Sharī‘ah, ‘Aqīdah, and other Islamic sciences — he promotes these foundational pillars to guide the Ummah’s revival. He is known for developing advanced theories that explore the role of Islamic jurisprudence in obtaining solutions for the contemporary challenges facing humanity, and he critically re-evaluates how Islamic legal rulings (fatāwa) can be formulated in light of modern sociopolitical realities. Shaykh Dr. Haitham al-Haddad earned his PhD from SOAS, University of London, with a doctoral thesis on Islamic jurisprudence concerning Muslim minorities. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in Sharī‘ah and Law from the University of Omdurman, Sudan, and a degree in engineering from the renowned King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) in Saudi Arabia. He has undertaken intensive studies in management, becoming a certified ISO 9000 auditor. In addition, he has studied various Islamic sciences under leading scholars of the Muslim world, including the former Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, Shaykh ‘Abdul-‘Aziz ibn Baz, among many others. He has obtained many classical ijāzāt in various Islamic sciences, including Qur'ān and Hadīth. Shaykh Haitham has served as an Islamic judge for several UK-based arbitration and legal bodies for over 20 years; he is a judge at Islamic Council. He has delivered hundreds of courses on topics such as Fiqh, ‘Aqīdah, Usūl al-Fiqh, Maqāsid al-Sharī‘ah, Tafsīr, Sīrah, Islamic Thought, Islamic Leadership and Management, Da'wah, Reform, and Political Engagement. Shaykh Haitham has also submitted many academic papers in many universities around the world. He is frequently consulted by numerous Islamic organisations across Europe and beyond, and serves as a senior scholar at Islam21c. Shaykh Haitham has lectured in various universities around the Muslim world, provided counsel to Islamic institutions, authored several books and textbooks for different institutions, and travelled extensively to advocate for the reform and unity of the Ummah.

[al- Ṭaḥawiyyah Pt 31 & 32] Seeing Allāh

(31) The Qur’ān is literally the word of Allāh Anyone who attributes something human to Allāh is an infidel.   وَمَنْ وَصَفَ اللَّهَ بِمَعْنًى مِنْ مَعَانِي الْبَشَرِ فَقَدْ كَفَرَ The very nature of the Qur’ān being from beyond this world, spoken by none other than Allāh, dictates that it be unlike anything created. It was the ultimate proof (burhān) that bore testimony to the veracity of Muhammad’s claim to Prophethood (Ṣallāhu ‘alayhi wa salam). Having said that the Qur’ān is literally the word of Allāh, originating from Him, the author thought it proper to mention that Allāh is not like man

THE ACTUAL KALĀM OF ALLĀH The author said that the believers: ‘are certain that is the actual Kalām of Allāh.’ This statement serves as a refutation for the Mu’tazilites who claimed that the Qur’ān was in fact the Kalām of Allāh (kalāmullah) in a figurative sense. Sound reasoning dictates that the Lord of all things must have the ability to speak as He wishes, when He wishes. Ibrāhīm (‘alay hisalām), even as a young child before Prophethood, would speak out against his idol-worshipping people. When he destroyed their idols, he challenged them by saying: ‘No; it was this great one

MISGUIDED VIEWS The Jahmites and the Mu’tazilites, who were among the first deviant sects to emerge, denied the attributes of Allāh claiming that this was the essence of tawḥīd. Therefore, they had to deny that the Qur’ān is the actual speech of Allāh. They claimed that confirming any attribute to Allāh other than His eternal essence entails an approval of multiple eternals and hence confirming that the speech of Allāh is one of His attributes which is different from his essence, means the same thing; the presence of multiple eternals. The misguided sects adopted a philosophical mindset of critical examination

Can you blame Muslims for wanting to segregate?

A recent statement by Channel 4’s Jon Snow sparked a large conversation in the media, where he revealed in an interview about meeting new female colleagues, “Sex comes into every evaluation of a woman, there’s no doubt about it.”  This revelation makes it even more difficult to understand the disgust that he displayed only weeks ago over the provision of separate seating for men and women in university Islamic Society events.  Hypocrisy aside, he has indeed highlighted why any real man—in touch with his natural disposition—would not want other men looking at his wife or close female relatives—regardless of his

وَ کُلھم مُتَقلبونَ فِی مَشِیئته ، بَین فَضله وَعَدله All of them are subject to His will, between either His grace or His justice. The statement of the author complements the many other points previously made regarding Divine Decree (qadar). The author discussed this point of theology in various places making it difficult to explore and study it comprehensively. The author said: ‘All of them are subject to His will, between either His grace or His justice’, which is expressive of the overwhelming and all-encompassing nature of Allah’s Will in relation to His creatures; as Allāh said: ‘But you will

Things occur as He ordains and wills them. His will is always carried out. There is no will for His servants except for what He wills for them. Whatever He wills for them happens and what He does not will for them does not happen. THE PHILOSOPHY OF THE JABRIYYA As the philosophy the Qadariyyah gained momentum through the increasingly popular Mu’tazilite sect, it elicited the predictable human phenomena of a counter reaction. The counter group that

Beware of the Marriage Bandits

I am sick of hearing about those brothers who prey upon the susceptibility of our sisters, using deception as a tool for marriage, and marriage as a guise for the fulfillment of their evil desires. I fear that if something is not done to tackle these abuses, we will only see the number of such incidents increase. Therefore, I feel compelled to share some of the cases I have encountered in order to highlight the nature of the issues at hand, and that we as a community must take drastic action to stop or minimize this evil. One of the

Reply from Dr. Haitham Al-Haddad to allegations made in the Daily Mail & Sunday Times newspaper

I was deeply saddened on Sunday morning to see the article in your newspaper maligning me and attributing beliefs to myself which I have for many years argued against. I would like to give The Sunday Times and the Daily Mail the benefit of the doubt and suggest that the articles are merely a product of lazy, armchair journalism rather than working towards a malicious agenda, I only wish you would have afforded me the same courtesy. However unfortunate, it does feel to me as though I am being deliberately demonised and my public image distorted by various right-wing newspapers,

Why Allāh tests us [al-Taḥawiyyah Pt 22]

وأمرَهم بطاعته ونهاهُم عن معصيتِه He Has Commanded Them to Obey Him and He Has Forbidden Them to Disobey Him.   The statement of the author should be read in context of the previous three statements. Besides creating all things, fixing their terms, knowing all their deeds; Allāh created human beings with a purpose which gave their life meaning and significance. As Allāh says: ‘I have not created the jinns and mankind except that they should worship Me’ . And so He ordered mankind with acts of devotion and prohibited them from acts of disobedience. One of the reasons for
