In times of financial crisis and economic uncertainties, Muslims find reassurance and guidance in the divine attribute of Allah, al-Razzāq, the Sustainer.
The more we take steps to internalise this divine attribute and its magnificent meanings, the more economic security and tranquillity we will experience throughout our lives.
The divine attribute of al-Razzāq
al-Razzāq, one of Allah’s beautiful names, signifies His role as the ultimate Provider and Sustainer of all creation.
The Qur’ān reminds us of His limitless provisions:
وَمَا مِن دَابَّةٍ فِي الْأَرْضِ إِلَّا عَلَى اللَّهِ رِزْقُهَا
“And there is no creature on Earth, but that upon Allah is its provision.” [1]
Trust and reliance: keys to emotional security
Financial crises often sow seeds of anxiety and insecurity.
However, as believers, we are constantly reminded of Allah’s fulfilling promise:
وَمَن يَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ فَهُوَ حَسْبُهُ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ بَالِغُ أَمْرِهِ ۚ قَدْ جَعَلَ اللَّهُ لِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدْرًا
“And whoever relies upon Allah — then He is sufficient for him.
“Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.” [2]
This verse serves as a powerful reminder that placing our trust and reliance on al-Razzāq, the Sustainer, is the cornerstone of economic security. It encourages us to take practical steps while entrusting our ultimate well-being to Allah’s divine wisdom.
Contentment and gratitude: keys to economic security
In Islam, contentment and gratitude are intrinsically linked to recognising the blessings of al-Razzāq.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasised the importance of contentment:
ليسَ الغِنَى عن كَثْرَةِ العَرَضِ، ولَكِنَّ الغِنَى غِنَى النَّفْسِ
“Richness is not having many belongings, but richness is the richness of the soul.” [3]
By nurturing a content heart and expressing gratitude for our blessings, we gain access to the limitless provisions of al-Razzāq, finding economic security, not solely in material wealth, but also in the enrichment of our souls.
In summary, al-Razzāq signifies that Allah’s role as the Sustainer and Provider is comprehensive, boundless, and universal.
It encourages believers to acknowledge their dependence upon Allah, trust in His divine wisdom, and respond with gratitude and generosity. This divine name serves as a daily reminder of Allah’s limitless mercy and the unwavering assurance that His provisions are always abundant and accessible to those who seek His sustenance.
