Shaykh Dr. Haitham al-Haddad is a jurist who seeks to contextualise classical Islamic knowledge for the modern era. He is a firm believer that Islam is uniquely qualified — more than any other system — to build a divine civilisation capable of helping humanity to enjoy a better life in all spheres by maintaining the correct balance between the rights of the Creator and the rights of the creation. He believes Islam is the only viable alternative to the failing unjust and oppressive contemporary world systems, as Allah says: "You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind: you enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and believe in Allah." (al-Qur'ān, 3:110) According to this verse, Shaykh Haitham identifies the pillars of Islamic reform as īmān (faith), unity of the Ummah, impactful action, and knowledge. Drawing from his expertise in Islamic principles — Usūl al-Fiqh, Maqāsid al-Sharī‘ah, ‘Aqīdah, and other Islamic sciences — he promotes these foundational pillars to guide the Ummah’s revival. He is known for developing advanced theories that explore the role of Islamic jurisprudence in obtaining solutions for the contemporary challenges facing humanity, and he critically re-evaluates how Islamic legal rulings (fatāwa) can be formulated in light of modern sociopolitical realities. Shaykh Dr. Haitham al-Haddad earned his PhD from SOAS, University of London, with a doctoral thesis on Islamic jurisprudence concerning Muslim minorities. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in Sharī‘ah and Law from the University of Omdurman, Sudan, and a degree in engineering from the renowned King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) in Saudi Arabia. He has undertaken intensive studies in management, becoming a certified ISO 9000 auditor. In addition, he has studied various Islamic sciences under leading scholars of the Muslim world, including the former Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, Shaykh ‘Abdul-‘Aziz ibn Baz, among many others. He has obtained many classical ijāzāt in various Islamic sciences, including Qur'ān and Hadīth. Shaykh Haitham has served as an Islamic judge for several UK-based arbitration and legal bodies for over 20 years; he is a judge at Islamic Council. He has delivered hundreds of courses on topics such as Fiqh, ‘Aqīdah, Usūl al-Fiqh, Maqāsid al-Sharī‘ah, Tafsīr, Sīrah, Islamic Thought, Islamic Leadership and Management, Da'wah, Reform, and Political Engagement. Shaykh Haitham has also submitted many academic papers in many universities around the world. He is frequently consulted by numerous Islamic organisations across Europe and beyond, and serves as a senior scholar at Islam21c. Shaykh Haitham has lectured in various universities around the Muslim world, provided counsel to Islamic institutions, authored several books and textbooks for different institutions, and travelled extensively to advocate for the reform and unity of the Ummah.

    The reminder was excellent

However I and many others would be more in tune with this thinking if our noble shuyookh who say all “halal mortgages” are impermissible would begin their speeches with a disclaimer about their OWN living arrangements ie renting, council housing etc.

Rightly or wrongly many will comment that it is EASY to preach like this when one is comfortably living in a large semi- or detached council house in a nice part of London with benefits while preaching to the average middle class professional that he/she must rent.

I don’t see why someone, a Shaykh, or otherwise, needs to disclose personal information to discuss a hadith? And yes, you are making assumptions!
Oh, forgot to explain myself, I live in a rented house in West Yorkshire, sorry not a semi or detached, a town house and a not so desirable area but plenty of Muslim. Not on benefits, pay our rent, council tax etc……
And there are solutions, we rent!

Yes I rent too, and always have done. And please tell me where I made assumptions. I stated clearly my reference to council houses was relating to OTHER islamic personalities. And yes I don’t think it would do any harm if more shuyookh would come out and say “yes I rent and it’s no big deal” so they lead by example. They are all too willing to disclose endless other anecdotes about their personal affairs so why not this?

This is a presumption about the sheikh and may even be sinful unless you have hard tangible evidence to back this up. The Sheikh is saying something that is very very important and needed in today’s age of Riba being everywhere and widely used. Riba is the major sin that Muslims now think is not sinful.

Please read the post. There is no assumption about the sheikh. Whatsoever. Nor any suggestion or insinuation.

The mention of nice houses in London refers to the council house residences of other well known islamic personalities who are also known to declare halal “mortgages” as outright haram.

My point was that if our scholars want to lead by example they should tell us what THEY do so that we can do the same. I don’t believe it is enough just to tell us what is haram without giving us a solution. And clearly they have a solution for themselves, so let us know.

    May Allaah bless this Sheikh.
This is a great reminder, alhamduillaah.
How we are always looking to furnish this life with the luxuries, not worried about pouring many hours into work to gain this ,yet with roughly 15 mins a day we are guaranteed a house in Jannah.
How many invest in this return?
How many can offer in this life such a fantastic investment.
Jazakallahukhairan for the a lovely talk.

MashAllah Alhamdulillah I am glad that we have reminders that make us live for the akhira, I havn’t had that many dealings with mrdf but one time they told me “leave the past …and build for the akhira” this sentence changed my perspective of life itself.

    May Allah reward the Sheikh.
To continue to put it into context:
12 rakaah a day is approx. 3 hrs a week . Many spend half their income servicing their mortgage (half of the typical working week is 20 hrs)
The abode of this life is the shortest, compared to the time in the grave and the hereafter. The intelligent one proportions his efforts accordingly.
    No repairs, failing boilers,leaking taps,peeling wallpaper … It’s a no brainer!
May Allah forgive us and make it easy for us to focus on the reality, ameen.

Very good, may allaah preserve the Shaikh! Ameen. Blessing to have him.

Would be nice to also see if there is any alternative to loan, if there isn’t then khalas, haraam is haraam – no two ways about it.
