In Islam, we are repeatedly encouraged to take a stand for justice and nobility, and to collectively work together to bring about social reform. With the advancement of technology and media, we are now able to convey a series of information, from one small part of the world to the entire globe, allowing our call to justice to reach a considerably huge audience.

The Prophetic campaign

Through taking a closer look at the lives of the prophets and their devout adherents, we find that they courageously stood for what was morally upright and sound, irrespective of the circumstance – as per the Qur’ānic instruction:

“O Believers! Be upholders of justice, and bearers of witness to truth for the sake of Allah, even though it may either be against yourselves or against your parents and kinsmen, or the rich or the poor: for Allah is more concerned with their wellbeing than you are…” [1]

Why campaign?

When we look around us, we see that Muslims are direct victims of injustice and oppression everywhere.

At the hands of the Chinese, they’re mercilessly placed into concentration camps; in India, they continue to be targets of callous systematic pogroms; in Palestine, their suffering is becoming never-ending as they repeatedly have their homes and land forcefully stripped away from them; and in Western countries, Muslims are subject to demonisation and persecution.

Why is it that some of us are still uninformed of the aforementioned sufferings of our brothers and sisters throughout the world?

Mainstream media only really provides coverage to Islam and Muslims, when associating them with terror and violence. For this reason, campaigning should be done by Muslims throughout the UK whenever possible, taking subtle steps to becoming voices for the voiceless.

Action plan

Here are a few things we can do to campaign more often throughout the short remainder of this month:

  1. Subscribe to Muslim media platforms that work to shed light on the sufferings of Muslims globally, e.g. 5Pillars and Islam21c;
  2. Join a local campaign that takes a stand against injustice.

Coming up

As we aim to be more proactive in supporting the oppressed, let’s have some thought about the upcoming topic for Part 26 of the series: offering our skills, talents, and expertise.

Consider the following: when was the last time you offered your skills or expertise to those around you?
