Shaykh Dr. Haitham al-Haddad

Shaykh Dr. Haitham al-Haddad is a jurist who seeks to contextualise classical Islamic knowledge for the modern era. He is a firm believer that Islam is uniquely qualified — more than any other system — to build a divine civilisation capable of helping humanity to enjoy a better life in all spheres by maintaining the correct balance between the rights of the Creator and the rights of the creation. He believes Islam is the only viable alternative to the failing unjust and oppressive contemporary world systems, as Allah says: "You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind: you enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and believe in Allah." (al-Qur'ān, 3:110) According to this verse, Shaykh Haitham identifies the pillars of Islamic reform as īmān (faith), unity of the Ummah, impactful action, and knowledge. Drawing from his expertise in Islamic principles — Usūl al-Fiqh, Maqāsid al-Sharī‘ah, ‘Aqīdah, and other Islamic sciences — he promotes these foundational pillars to guide the Ummah’s revival. He is known for developing advanced theories that explore the role of Islamic jurisprudence in obtaining solutions for the contemporary challenges facing humanity, and he critically re-evaluates how Islamic legal rulings (fatāwa) can be formulated in light of modern sociopolitical realities. Shaykh Dr. Haitham al-Haddad earned his PhD from SOAS, University of London, with a doctoral thesis on Islamic jurisprudence concerning Muslim minorities. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in Sharī‘ah and Law from the University of Omdurman, Sudan, and a degree in engineering from the renowned King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) in Saudi Arabia. He has undertaken intensive studies in management, becoming a certified ISO 9000 auditor. In addition, he has studied various Islamic sciences under leading scholars of the Muslim world, including the former Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, Shaykh ‘Abdul-‘Aziz ibn Baz, among many others. He has obtained many classical ijāzāt in various Islamic sciences, including Qur'ān and Hadīth. Shaykh Haitham has served as an Islamic judge for several UK-based arbitration and legal bodies for over 20 years; he is a judge at Islamic Council. He has delivered hundreds of courses on topics such as Fiqh, ‘Aqīdah, Usūl al-Fiqh, Maqāsid al-Sharī‘ah, Tafsīr, Sīrah, Islamic Thought, Islamic Leadership and Management, Da'wah, Reform, and Political Engagement. Shaykh Haitham has also submitted many academic papers in many universities around the world. He is frequently consulted by numerous Islamic organisations across Europe and beyond, and serves as a senior scholar at Islam21c. Shaykh Haitham has lectured in various universities around the Muslim world, provided counsel to Islamic institutions, authored several books and textbooks for different institutions, and travelled extensively to advocate for the reform and unity of the Ummah.

Refugee Crisis: Has Europe set an example for Muslim nations? All of a sudden every media outlet is cross-posting the picture of the young child who drowned in the sea. All of a sudden the entire world is talking about Syrian refugees with many European countries posing as the world's supreme ethical heroes, humanely conscious without bounds and sympathetic to desperate refugees from the very beginning, opening their borders for them, once and for all. All of a sudden the entire world is singing the praises of this 'benevolence', and 'morality', this rather "extra ordinary compassion" displayed by Europe and

All praise be to Allāh and may our salāh and salām be upon the Prophet (sall Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam). When I first read the news about the findings of what may be considered the world’s oldest manuscript of the Glorious Qur’ān in Birmingham University Library, I was not so excited nor was I bothered very much. For me, the infamous talk by David Cameron that was delivered less than 24 hours was more important news. Also read, Plotting of Cameron, of al-Rahman & the discovery of a Qur’an by Z A Rahman. UK and Europe Prayer & Fasting Explanation

The prayer and fasting timetables listed in the link above were obtained based on what is now known as the “18 degree formula” along with some necessary amendments to cater for the abnormal circumstances many European countries face due to their high location in the Northern Hemisphere. It is beyond the remit of this article to go through the juristic discussion regarding the correct methodology in formulating a timetable, yet it is sufficient to say that the “18 degree formula” is accepted and used by the overwhelming majority of Muslims around the World and has been used extensively throughout Islamic history.

In the name of Allāh; all praise belongs to Allāh; may His peace, salutations and blessings be upon His final Messenger, Muḥammad (sall Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam). Many Muslim leaders call for political participation by highlighting the problems that Muslims in the UK or Europe are facing. Islamophobia, institutional discrimination, widespread ignorance and xenophobia, Islamic education, halāl facilities and other such issues are what are often brought to the fore to show why Muslims should become politically active. No doubt, these are important issues, however I feel the need to address the whole issue of Muslim political participation from a

All praise be to Allāh and may His blessings be upon His prophet (sall Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam). Today’s European Muslims are facing unprecedented challenges. In fact, it can be said that we are at a crossroads in terms of our future in Europe.  Islām and Muslims will either continue the successful journey of positive integration with their wider societies, or be forced to assimilate and lose any meaningful Islamic identity.  The key question that should and has been asked by everyone is: how do we face such challenges? A variety of answers have been put forward by various Muslim

The Passing of Sheikh Harith al Dari - the Lion of the Sunnah For the Ummah to lose a great scholar and influential figure in times of strength and resilience is of the greatest of calamities. How is it then for the Ummah to lose such a leader in its most traumatic times and when it needs them most? A time characterised by division, weakness and the gathering of nations around it as they gather around a plate of food. In these difficult times, facing the generality of the Ummah and in particular Iraq, the news of the death of

All praise belongs to Allāh, may His blessings and salutations be upon His final Messenger, Muhammad (sall Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam). Introduction Last week an article in the Telegraph entitled “Worried about Muslims in Britain? Here’s the answer…” caused quite an uproar. The headline has since been changed as well as the poll being removed, presumably due to too many negative votes. However, it was not just the reckless headline that was the problem, but the article was full of hidden and overt ignorant presumptions and fallacies, representing a blind arrogance and condescension towards Islām and Muslims. In keeping with the
