Shaykh Dr. Haitham al-Haddad

Shaykh Dr. Haitham al-Haddad is a jurist who seeks to contextualise classical Islamic knowledge for the modern era. He is a firm believer that Islam is uniquely qualified — more than any other system — to build a divine civilisation capable of helping humanity to enjoy a better life in all spheres by maintaining the correct balance between the rights of the Creator and the rights of the creation. He believes Islam is the only viable alternative to the failing unjust and oppressive contemporary world systems, as Allah says: "You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind: you enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and believe in Allah." (al-Qur'ān, 3:110) According to this verse, Shaykh Haitham identifies the pillars of Islamic reform as īmān (faith), unity of the Ummah, impactful action, and knowledge. Drawing from his expertise in Islamic principles — Usūl al-Fiqh, Maqāsid al-Sharī‘ah, ‘Aqīdah, and other Islamic sciences — he promotes these foundational pillars to guide the Ummah’s revival. He is known for developing advanced theories that explore the role of Islamic jurisprudence in obtaining solutions for the contemporary challenges facing humanity, and he critically re-evaluates how Islamic legal rulings (fatāwa) can be formulated in light of modern sociopolitical realities. Shaykh Dr. Haitham al-Haddad earned his PhD from SOAS, University of London, with a doctoral thesis on Islamic jurisprudence concerning Muslim minorities. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in Sharī‘ah and Law from the University of Omdurman, Sudan, and a degree in engineering from the renowned King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) in Saudi Arabia. He has undertaken intensive studies in management, becoming a certified ISO 9000 auditor. In addition, he has studied various Islamic sciences under leading scholars of the Muslim world, including the former Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, Shaykh ‘Abdul-‘Aziz ibn Baz, among many others. He has obtained many classical ijāzāt in various Islamic sciences, including Qur'ān and Hadīth. Shaykh Haitham has served as an Islamic judge for several UK-based arbitration and legal bodies for over 20 years; he is a judge at Islamic Council. He has delivered hundreds of courses on topics such as Fiqh, ‘Aqīdah, Usūl al-Fiqh, Maqāsid al-Sharī‘ah, Tafsīr, Sīrah, Islamic Thought, Islamic Leadership and Management, Da'wah, Reform, and Political Engagement. Shaykh Haitham has also submitted many academic papers in many universities around the world. He is frequently consulted by numerous Islamic organisations across Europe and beyond, and serves as a senior scholar at Islam21c. Shaykh Haitham has lectured in various universities around the Muslim world, provided counsel to Islamic institutions, authored several books and textbooks for different institutions, and travelled extensively to advocate for the reform and unity of the Ummah.

The London Riots

11 Min Read

The past few days has seen riots take place, not only in London, but across many major British cities. Although the source of the mayhem was actually a peaceful demonstration in the London borough of Tottenham, what followed was not a united front against alleged police brutality and institutional racism but mass looting and anarchy. Such actions are indeed an outrage and are intolerable in a civilized society, yet the ferocity with which rioters have been destroying property and attacking fellow citizens leaves us asking many questions about the condition of the society we live in. Prior to discussing the

This divine writ was not revealed to be a book of hymns for aural enjoyment, but instead as a book of guidance, for Allāh says in the Qur’ān, “(This is) a Book (the Qur’ān) which We

Murdoch: End of a Dictator

6 Min Read

As the Murdoch empire crumbles around Rupert and his executives, the world watches on as the News of the World newspaper is finished, Fox is under review in America, and Rupert’s hopes of full ownership of BSkyB are dashed. Even the British parliament is united in diminishing the power of Murdoch with the leader of the opposition Ed Miliband calling for the breakdown of Murdoch’s empire, and Murdoch having to meet with a Parliamentary select committee concerning the affairs of News of the World, and possibly News Corp. However, no matter how powerful we assumed Murdoch was or is, it

Advice to Muslims on the Death of Osama bin Ladin

8 Min Read

The killing of Osama bin Ladin, may Allah have mercy on him, if proven to be true, may either be a coincidence or part of a strategic manoeuvre by the US and its allies to justify the adoption of new tactics in their ‘war on terror’ that has clearly proven to be counterproductive. It may be alleged that he was killed a long time ago but the killing was only now announced as a justification for the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan. All of these are possibilities that no one can emphatically confirm, and indeed, there need not be

Attractive Hijabs & Shari’ah

10 Min Read

Living in the west, the hijab has become a potent indicator of identity with many non-Muslims viewing it as a political statement. However, it is pertinent to note that the hijab is, first and foremost, an act of worship that women engage in, and an act undertaken to seek the pleasure of one’s Lord. The definition of a hijab is fiercely contested by many Muslims, and unfortunately most of those who engage in the topic are unaware that it is very much defined by Islamic law, the Shari’ah, and not cultural habits or one’s idea of what modesty is, or

Fatwa: What Would the Iddah Period be?

A: Being separated from the husband before the pronouncement of divorce does not in any way remove the requirement that is the ‘Iddah period. Allah linked the ‘iddah with divorce itself and not with separation. As Allah said:  “Divorced women remain in waiting for three periods.”  This was also the practice of the Prophet (peace be upon him).   It should be noted that divorce is of two types; Revocable and irrevocable. Revocable divorce is the first or second divorce within the ‘Iddat period. As Allah said:  “Divorce is twice. Then, either keep in an acceptable manner or release with

Normal 0 false false false EN-GB X-NONE X-NONE Muslims believe from divine scripture that the whole of mankind has been ennobled, and it is in that sense of shared humanity that Muslims feel saddened over the recent catastrophe that Japan has faced. It is the soft heart of the believer that requires him/her to reflect upon catastrophes such as the recent one where thousands have perished and thousands of others are still missing. More than 1,000 bodies washed ashore on the first day in the north-eastern area hardest hit by the magnitude 8.9 quake that struck in the Pacific Ocean

Revolution in Libya: A proof for the Ummah

As we all know, the Libyan leader Gaddafi has recently been massacring his own people just to stay in power. However, even though the armed forces and the current despotic state has been oppressing its own citizens, the Libyan people are showing the world that they have had enough and desire regime change and freedom from governments that are supported by the west. Similarly, the Muslims of Libya have had enough of Gaddafi’s tyranny, and just like the Egyptian people, they will march in the streets until the tyrant is gone. Despite the fact that this dictator has been in

The fall of Egyptian regime will be a turning point in current history, it might even be more significant than 9/11. This incident will create so many implications on different levels.   . It can be easily said that the Egyptians could obtain a very high level of independence -Egypt is not any country, it is the heart of the Muslim world and most importantly the heart of the Middle East and its most populous Muslim Sunni country. The US was very keen to keep very good relations with Egypt, whilst monitoring it closely to make sure that it is
