Muslim activist and Chief Editor of Islam21c Dr Salman Butt is taking legal action against the Home Secretary after he was named in a Government press release about hate preachers - suggesting they be barred from university campuses for fear of radicalising students. The Phd graduate is also challenging the Home Office Prevent agenda, claiming it fundamentally breaches free speech and other human rights. Senior Home Affairs correspondent Simon Israel has this exclusive story.
The Government’s entire counter-extremism strategy is to be challenged in the courts for the first time. In this Judicial review case the Court has found that there is an arguable case on behalf of Dr Salman Butt, Chief Editor of Islam21c.  Dr Butt challenged the government which dubbed him as an "extremist" and "hate speaker" on a 10 Downing Street press release last September.  Dr Butt had no right of reply. This is in breach of the rules of natural justice and unlawful. Permission has been granted to take the case to trial. This will happen on a date to be…

Some might have been surprised to see CAGE speaking at hacktivist conventions and international conferences on privacy and surveillance alongside Edward Snowden, Wikileaks and the Tor Project. The link between mass surveillance and the War on Terror is obvious: governments around the world use the national security argument to justify systematic intrusions into people’s privacy, as well as circumvent the rule of law. As an organisation guided by an Islamic ethos, CAGE was also inspired by fundamental teachings of Islam which staunchly oppose intrusive monitoring and champion the sanctity of privacy. Today's development has developed by a small minority within the Turkish Armed Forces (TAF) and it is a movement that is being used by the parallel forces. I firmly believe that these people will receive the punishment they deserve with a response from all of our combined (Turkish/society) strength. They are using resources that have been given to them by our people in the form of tanks, canons, airplanes, helicopters, and they are using them on our people, which will have an extremely heavy price that they will have…

Yesterday we heard news of perhaps the biggest political earthquake in a generation, the UK voting to leave the EU, with a slim majority. There have been laughs, there have been regrets; there have been cheers and optimism; there have already been broken promises, there have been doomsday predictions and emboldened racists scaring ethnic minorities; young people angered and over 1.7million people petitioning for a second referendum already; and tears of both joy and sorrow—depending on where you get your news. There is much analysis to come over the coming days and weeks, and no doubt campaigning to make sure…
